The Fannie Booth Brown Library annual summer reading program and weekly featured speaker, sponsored by the Center Noon Lions Club is underway.

“The goal is to prevent the ‘summer slide’ in reading and make it enjoyable for the kids,” said Library Director Sandra Davis.

Each week will feature a different speaker providing an interactive experience bringing reading to life and making it fun for kids. The first week will feature Justin Carpenter from Texas Parks and Wildlife on camping. He will even bring animals for kids to identify.

During the second week, a group of teachers who dedicate summers to educating children will attend library events teaching about animals. Kids might even get to pet a couple of animals.

The Texas Forest Service will lead week three, teaching children about the forest and all it has to offer. Dive Depot from Nacogdoches will host an underwater adventure at the library in week four, where kids will learn about dive equipment and underwater animals and plants. Week five will be full of magic and wonder with Magician Bekka to amaze and enchant children with tricks and magic. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas will bring their traveling trunks and educate children about Texas and what life was like in settler times, transporting kids back to the wild and free days of Texas.

A reading program started May 30 and must be completed and turned in by July 12. An award ceremony and party is set for July for everyone who turns in reading logs.

Kids must keep a reading log listing the titles of the books they read or a time log that records how much time they spend reading to be eligible. Non-readers can also participate, and parents can keep the log for them. Children can join the program at any time in June.

Sandra and Roy Davis have started decorating the Fannie Booth Brown Library for the summer to create an atmosphere of camping, hiking, and other exciting activities. They can’t wait for the adventures to begin in the library.
