The Center City Council denied a rezoning request of property at 201 (200) Pearl Street in Center. The action came at the council’s regular meeting Monday, July 22. The rezoning request was postponed at a prior meeting pending more information which the council received from the planning and zoning committee.

Mayor David Chadwick told the property owners they might want to “try and find another direction.”

Also approved was an ordinance designating McCowan Street for one-way traffic. No roadway concerns were noted on the review.

The council approved a resolution authorizing publication and posting of notice of intention to issue certificates of obligation to fund utility capital improvements. The action allows budget funding for the Aiken Water Treatment Plant Replacement project, an update to increase the city’s growing water needs. According to the council packet information, the certificates will be paid from revenues generated by utility operations, not tax revenues.

County Election Officer Nancy Adams presented a contract for election services and a joint election agreement. Similar contracts have already been approved by the county, and were approved by the council Monday.

Also approved was a motion to proceed with authorizing a Project Plan and Budget for MHS Planning & Design for a general proposed concept plan, layout and project budget for grant application with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Small Community Grant Program. The project calls for restoration of the American Legion Park connected to the Community House.
