The NCAA could be making changes to the transfer portal windows
According to multiple reports, the NCAA is considering getting rid of the spring transfer portal window. If this is approved, there would only be about a month, from December 9th to January 7th, for players to choose to attend a different school. Honestly, this makes plenty of sense, as I believe that the NCAA rushed through adopting the new transfer rules.
Knoxville Community School District Welcomes Students Back on Monday
The Knoxville Community School district will welcome students back to the classroom on Monday. School starts at 7:55 this morning and for the first two days school will dismiss at 1:25 pm for all students K-12. This year, the district is welcoming in twelve new teachers and one new principal. The district also has brand new playground equipment at West Elementary that was installed over the summer and the Randy Wilson Track Improvement Project is complete. Superintendent Cassi Pearson says she loves the energy of the first day of school.
Heat Wave Continues into Mid-Week Locally
An late-summer heat wave is set to continue through the middle of the week, according to the National Weather Service. Heat index values will exceed 100 degrees an approach 110 in many locations during this timeframe. Extended outdoor activities are not recommended. Although the hottest temperatures will be during the day, overnight lows will only reach the mid 70s, leaving little reprieve from the heat. Relief will begin slowly on Wednesday before a return to seasonal, mild conditions by the weekend.
Axsom Becomes Seventh First Time 410 Sprint Car Winner on Championship Night at Knoxville
KNOXVILLE, Iowa (August 24, 2024) – Champions were crowned Saturday on McKay Insurance Group Season Championship Night at the Knoxville Raceway. Emerson Axsom won his first career 410 feature at Knoxvillle, while Austin McCarl won his third track championship with the series. Aaron Reutzel won his sixth 360 feature of the year Saturday, while Jamie Ball claimed his first season title. Ryan Navratil won for the second time in a row with the Pro Sprints, while Mike Mayberry claimed his second track championship in a row by just ten points.
Three Track Champions Crown Saturday Night At Knoxville
Three track champions were crowned Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway as the season ending sprint car races were run heard live on KNIA. Emerson Axsom collected his first career 410 win at Knoxville by blowing by Carson McCarl on lap 14 and was never challenged. Aaron Reutzel did what Aaron Reutzel does in the 360s and won as he took the lead on lap ten and won comfortably. Ryan Navratil capped off a late season surge with another win in the Pro Sprints. However all of the attention was on the three track champions as Austin McCarl won for the 3rd time in his career and second straight, Mike Mayberry won his 2nd Pro Sprints title and Jamie Ball finally got his track championship after trying for 14 seasons. Ball told KNIA/KRLS Sports it was a long time in coming.

Alleged arson and DWI lead to charges for Purdin resident
A Purdin man has been charged with two felonies following an alleged attempt to set fire to a house in Chillicothe on August 22. According to online court records, Johnny Lee Collis, 32, faces charges of attempted first-degree arson and driving while intoxicated as an aggravated offender. No bond has been set for his release.
Perry Food Pantry In Need of Several Items
The Perry Food Pantry is soliciting donations of specific items that will benefit the community. The food pantry is looking for miscellaneous items recommending people bring cake mixes, mustard, ketchup, barbecue sauce, spices, large boxes of jello, pickles, syrup, jelly, diced mushrooms, and green chilis. Although the pantry is only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Perry Food Pantry Manager Lou Hoger tells Raccoon Valley Radio that there is a cart outside in front of the organization that people can drop off items anytime.
Dexter Fest’s Activities Today & Tomorrow
Another fall celebration is going on in the Dallas County area today and tomorrow. The City of Dexter is hosting Dexter Fest as the day will begin at 8am with a 5K Run/Walk at the Park Coffee Truck by The Cup on 2nd Street. The parade will kick off at 11am starting east on Washington Street then follow Lyon Street towards Warren Street, travel west on Polk Street before finishing north on Marshall Street. There will be games available at City Park from 11:30am-3pm with a lunch at the legion at noon, kids water fights at noon (on Polk St. & Marshall St.) with a car show, on 916 State Street, at that same time. Food trucks will be open to the public from 4-10pm then a live music street dance is taking place from 9pm-midnight for all ages.
