The Crook County Cowgirl softball team had a big opening week of conference play, defeating Gladstone twice early in the week, before rolling past Estacada 10-1 Friday.

As well as Crook County played in their three league victories, they struggled Saturday against the defending Class 2A state champion Grant Union Prospectors, falling 7-0 in a non-league matchup in Prineville.

Friday the Cowgirls started slowly, but quickly turned things around, scoring two runs in the second inning. Crook County added five more runs in the fourth to take control of the game. Estacada tried to come back, scoring a run in the fifth. However, Crook County put the game away with three runs in the top half of the seventh inning.

The Cowgirls pounded out 15 hits against the Rangers, including doubles from Azmita Pennington and Jaycee Villastrigo along with a triple from Kaylyn Fildes.

Alyson Ware went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Danner Hemphill was 3-for-4, Adyson Luna went 2-for-3, Raelynn Weaver 2-for-4 and Pennington 2-for-4. Kya Mozingo also had a hit in the contest.

Meanwhile, Villastrigo pitched six innings, giving up five hits and striking out four, while Weaver pitched the seventh inning, not allowing a hit and striking out one.

    Facing the Prospectors

Saturday was a different story. As hot as the Crook County bats were on Friday the Cowgirls managed just one hit Saturday against the Prospectors. Jolene Bartolotti had the lone Crook County hit, a bunt single, while the Prospectors had nine hits, including a double by Halle Parsons, a triple from Drew Williams and a home run from Savannah Watterson.

Williams pitched a complete game for Grant Union, striking out 17 Cowgirl batters, while walking just three. Meanwhile, Weaver pitched the complete game for Crook County, walking five, striking out seven and giving up the nine hits.

Crook County is now 8-4 on the year and 3-0 in Tri-Valley Conference play. Meanwhile, Estacada is now 8-4 overall and 2-1 in league play, while Grant Union improved to 10-1 on the year.

The Cowgirls have a busy week ahead. Monday they host Estacada. The team hosts Madras, 3-6, 1-2 on Wednesday, then play the White Buffalos again on Thursday in Madras.

The week ends Saturday when Crook County travels to Klamath Falls to take on No. 1-ranked Henley. The two teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader a week ago, with Henley winning game one. However, the second game was called because of darkness with the game tied 2-2. The two teams agreed to play again on Saturday, finishing the unfinished game, then playing a second game later in the day.

All three league games are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m., while the games at Henley are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
