Matsutake mushroom season starts Sept. 3, which is a reminder that some library programs always draw a large crowd: mushrooming, birding, local history, to name a few. The Crook County Library collection offers items to help patrons discover new and exciting hobbies. Curious and want to find out what is nibbling on your fruit trees? Check out a game camera from our Library of Things collection. Interested in exploring dark sky areas, check out a telescope and a copy of “The Amazing Nigh Sky Atlas,” by Nancy Dickmann. And just when you think you have eaten about all the zucchinis, cucumbers and tomatoes you can enjoy, take a break and then get excited all over again planning next year’s garden. Last year, during the free seed giveaway in January, one library patron shared he grows citrus in his underground greenhouse. Feel free to check out our wonderful selection of gardening books, and do not forget to visit your friendly OSU Extension office on Lynn Boulevard.

There is also a bounty of inspiration on the Bookmobile. Library services are available at stops in Paulina, Post, Ochoco West and up Juniper Canyon on the third Monday each month at Juniper Canyon Baptist Church. On Saturday, Sept. 21, the donated materials on the bus will be given to the Friends of the Library for their 3rd Saturday Book Sale. After Sept. 21, the collection on the bus will contain regular library materials available for check out with library card. Don’t have a free library card? Feel free to visit the Bookmobile or swing by the Crook County Library, at 175 NW Meadow Lakes Drive, Prineville, Oregon.

As you are driving past the Crook County Library, please take a moment to admire the updated landscaping. We appreciate the efforts of Wendels landscaping. Also, the Broughton Room has a fresh coat of paint, thanks to the great work of the Crook County Facilities Department.

Crook County Library enjoys partnerships with many local organizations. You may notice MERV (Mobile Employment Resource Van) parked in the lot every other Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. MERV’s next visit will be Sept. 10. If you need job search assistance, help preparing for an interview, a new resume or if you just need career guidance, MERV is available to help.

Thrive provides free consultations for people looking to connect with local social services. Thrive meets with clients at Crook County Library on Tuesdays (10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) and Thursdays (12-2:30 p.m.). Thrive helps with housing, food, shelter, basic needs, employment/disability support and assistance with health and mental health. They also connect local veterans with resources. Oregon Department of Human Services also offers services at Crook County Library on the second and fourth Tuesdays, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The 2024 Summer Reading Program was a great success with more than 643 people participating. Stay tuned for the list of library programs this fall. Here is a hint: Are mushrooms cool? Morel less (parade.com/living/mushroom-puns-jokes).

As you enjoy our beautiful area, here is a quote from Vincent Van Gogh: “As long as autumn lasts, I shall not have hands, canvas and colours enough to paint the beautiful things I see.”

    Have a wonderful fall!
