Over $130k to boost adult literacy programs in Centre County

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — A $133,106 grant was awarded to Penn State University to help their tutoring program for adult learners and expand their literary resources.

The grant was awarded through the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Tutoring Program for Adults . It’s part of a package of funding to five school entities to train and support volunteer adult literacy education instructors, or tutors, who instruct students in adult education and literacy programs.

“This grant support underscores the power of literacy and lifelong learning,” State Representative Paul Takac (D-Centre) said. “I am excited to see Penn State receive this award, which will significantly enhance their adult tutoring programs and positively impact communities across the commonwealth.”

“Literacy holds the key to so many life opportunities, from finding good-paying jobs and successfully navigating community resources to helping one’s children with homework,” State Representative Scott Conklin added. “But too many adults still struggle with basic literacy needs. This new funding will bring those essential skills to more residents, including many for whom English is a second language, so they can chart a more productive future for themselves and their families.”

More than $1 million was awarded to five school entities as part of the program. The other recipients are as follows:

• Lehigh Carbon Community College, $84,348, Lehigh County
• Intermediate Unit 1, $58,000, Washington County
• Literacy Council of Lancaster Lebanon, $150,000, Lancaster and Lebanon counties
• Literacy Pittsburgh, $659,046, Allegheny and Beaver counties
