Despite reports indicating the U.S. economy is creating fewer jobs than previously thought , Pennsylvania’s labor industry appears to be in a strong position entering the dog days of summer.

The commonwealth’s unemployment rate remained at 3.4% in July, unchanged from the previous nine months, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry’s latest unemployment report released Aug. 16 . Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate remains well below the national 4.3% unemployment rate.

Pennsylvania’s civilian labor force — or the estimated number of residents working or looking for employment — sits at roughly 6.6 million, down roughly 1,000 from June. However, the commonwealth’s total number of nonfarm jobs increased by about 12,200 last month to a record-high 6.2 million job count.

Nonfarm jobs vary widely, and many high-paying gigs with strong benefits are available in the public sector — even for those hoping to work remotely.
