Sony Pictures Entertainment launched a new Kraven The Hunter trailer today which has confirmed the film’s carnal violence and its R rating.

The new trailer for Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel’s Kraven The Hunter has been released today, and it shows Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s commitment to becoming the Hunter. While the trailer does showcase gratuitous violence and blood worthy of an R-rated film, what’s more, is how the film appears to loosely follow the comic book origin. The new trailer can be seen below in all of its bloody glory announced from the official movie X (formerly Twitter) account.

Kraven The Hunter is a notorious Spider-Man villain who recently appeared as a main antagonist in the Game of the Year award runner-up, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Still, he has appeared far earlier than that. Kraven The Hunter was introduced to the Marvel universe in 1964, and his villain origin story can be seen as tragic as some of the heroes don capes.

Kraven the Hunter was born Sergei Kravinoff to the Russian aristocracy, he was abused as a child by his father (played by Russell Crowe in the movie) and the film appears to portray that in a similar, yet different way than the comics. The main difference is that his superpowers were granted by a series of mystical potions and an amulet in the comic book origin story, whereas in the movie, a lion’s bite appears to grant him his power as the Hunter, and while the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father was severe in the comics, the movie portrays it as a general abandonment.

Kraven the Hunter stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular character Kraven, with Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott and Russell Crowe . The film is directed by J.C. Chandor (known for A Most Violent Year ) and is set to release in theatres on December 13.
