Shonen Jump Reveals Jujutsu Kaisen’s Manga to End in Five More Chapters

Shonen Jump announced today that Jujutsu Kaisen’s manga serialization will end in five more chapters.

A major announcement dropped from the big manga company upstairs, Shonen Jump. The company announced that Jujutsu Kaisen’s manga serialization will end in five more chapters , following a live YouTube stream today. Creator Gege Akutami hinted toward the series’ imminent end in December during Jump Festa ’24, and the final Shinjuku Showdown arc has already been feeling like it is wrapping up its biggest fight yet.

The series has crossed into so many mediums, memes and media. Most recently, many athletes have been making finger gestures similar to when the most popular Jujutsu Kaisen character, Satoru Gojo, activates his Domain Expansion. This was seen at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Along with the Olympics, the reference was made in a spoiler-filled cosplay from Usher and a referential song from Megan Thee Stallion’s latest album, Otaku Hot Girl. Overall, the memes have been flowing, but like all good things, it must come to an end eventually.

At least the anime will keep going for a while! Jujutsu Kaisen began serialization in March 2018 and was adapted into an anime in October 2020. Both seasons of its anime also won the Crunchyroll Anime of the Year Award in 2020 and 2023 . The anime was produced by Studio MAPPA ( Chainsaw Man , Attack on Titan ) and is gearing up for its third season—which will adapt the manga’s third major arc, the Culling Game.

The Shinjuku Showdown arc has been ongoing since May 2023, and manga readers have been experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions. Some have even noted their exhaustion from this final arc and its length. For those exclusively watching the Jujutsu Kaisen anime , the Culling Game arc (the arc leading up to the final arc) will probably be the most dynamic arc of the whole series.

While the Culling Game arc sets up many things and answers many questions, it has many moving parts. It is like one big funnel. Going back to the manga, Jujutsu Kaisen does not feel like it will have as solid a wrap-up as My Hero Academia did recently on August 4th. I thought the story wrapped up nicely, but fans still expected a better wrap-up for a manga series with so many characters.

With this announcement from Shonen Jump, Jujutsu Kaisen fans and I are worried about the various story threads that must happen within the next five 19-page chapters. Some of the fan reception have even gone as far as to say that Akutami’s character writing will ultimately fail if the ending does not tie things up for each of the remaining characters. This is a fair assessment, but manga readers will also know that Akutami is somewhat similar to George R.R. Martin in A Game of Thrones in that not every character is safe in his story.

In other news, the Jump Next Gen Battle Manga award was announced. It featured illustrations of protagonists from Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, Black Clover, and Bleach by My Hero Academia creator Kohei Horikoshi. Some have signalled this is the end of an era for popular shonen battle manga. In a written statement, the Akutami wrote: “This will probably definitely be the last Jump Festa where Jujutsu Kaisen is still in serialization,” according to Anime News Network .
