Matt Reeves’ The Batman Universe Could Be Expanding to Video Games

A new rumour shared by Puck News claims that a Batman video game is being developed, set in the universe of Matt Reeves’ film, The Batman .

According to the report, AT&T attempted to sell the Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment video games division in 2020 for $4 billion, before deciding it was “too valuable to unload.”

Puck News states, “When Zaslav took over, many advised him to offload games. But Zas still sees the games unit as strategic, especially as the various WBD divisions are beginning to collaborate more closely on properties like the upcoming Penguin HBO show and game, both seeded in the 2022 The Batman movie.”

While the quote mentions The Penguin TV series , it’s unlikely the video game is directly related and is likely just an example of The Batman being spun off into other media. Of course, we currently have no idea what kind of game it could be or which studio is handling it.

The Batman was released in theatres in 2022, starring Robert Pattinson as a new version of the Caped Crusader. Directed by Matt Reeves, the film also starred Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Colin Farrell as Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. A sequel is currently in the works, while the spinoff show, The Penguin , is set to hit HBO on September 19, 2024.

Interestingly, this wouldn’t be the first time Matt Reeves’ Batman has appeared in a video game, as Pattinson’s suit from the film was added to Batman: Arkham Knight in a 2023 update.

Batman has remained one of the most popular superheroes in video games for decades, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a bold new direction for him. Batman was featured in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League earlier this year, which takes place in the Arkham universe. A new VR Arkham game, Batman: Arkham Shadow for Meta Quest 3, is also planned for release in October.
