The New Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* Trailer Teases Sentry

Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* dropped their first teaser trailer, revealing a May 2, 2025 release date.

Some of Marvel Cinematic Universe ‘s most ambiguous characters are about to assemble and shine. Marvel Studios officially dropped their new teaser trailer today for Thunderbolts* . It disclosed the complete lineup of villains, anti-heroes, and heroes for the film coming out on May 2, 2025. One big surprise was the teasing of the comic book character Sentry, referred to as “Bob” in the trailer.

The tagline for Thunderbolts was “careful who you assemble,” suggesting that some characters may not stay around or may not be on the good side for long. This makes sense as this will be somewhat DC’s equivalent to The Suicide Squad . The film appeared to be bringing back Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

For major MCU fans, there was a lot of hinted at exposition in this teaser trailer, so it is definitely a must-watch. But if you were a lucky fan to have gone to SDCC 2024 , this trailer was an exclusive first-look there . It really highlighted Pugh’s Yelena ( Hawkeye ) as the main character who reunites with her dad, The Red Guardian, backed by the Pixies song “Where Is My Mind?” From there, it quickly showed the state of the other characters expected to be in the film.

The plot looked to be driven by Yelena mentioning how they all must have been assembled to be disposed of, but may quickly be a dispersed plot line as we have seen Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina slowly creating the Thunderbolts team in the shadows. There was a shot of Bucky shooting a rocket at Yelena and The Red Guardian, so maybe he might be brainwashed again, or he just did not trust any of them at first? We also do not learn if Robert “Bob” Reynolds will become Sentry in this movie.

Jake Schreier directs Thunderbolts* with Kevin Feige producing. Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, Jason Tamez and Scarlett Johansson serve as executive producers. The general aesthetics of the trailer were reminiscent of the Black Widow but with a yellow-and-black colorway.

The title alone with the asterisk hints that the team may change over the course of the movie, potentially some of them not buying the concept Valentina is selling. Based on the characters shown, the energy appeared to match that of the Captain America / Black Widow films and TV shows, so it will be interesting to see how this mashup works. And if Bob will be like the Thor of their group, both as the comic relief and the muscle.
