CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Champaign’s Avicenna Health Center is now seeing people needing skin or wound care.

Organizers said they noticed a need for the services in Central Illinois. Avicenna is a medical student-run health center offering all care free of charge. They’ve been offering help with primary care, eye health and common disease resources for years with the help from doctors.

University of Illinois med student Christian Guerrero-Juarez, who focuses on hair follicles and skin regeneration, said his vision to begin the skin care branch started last year.

“People were not receiving proper skin and wound care services, and so I teamed up with a local dermatologist who shared the vision that I had,” he said. “And we were able to start this clinic, which now has come to fruition, and we’re very excited to have it inaugurated today.”

Guerrero-Juarez said they focus on the underserved population and all people are welcome. Avicenna recommends setting up an appointment for visits, but they do take walk-ins. It’s open on Sundays and select Saturdays, and services vary depending on the day.

Avicenna has been helping people needing medical attention since 2009. For more information or to schedule an appointment, visit their website .
