CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign Police Department is still investigating a shooting over the Fourth of July weekend that left two people hurt. Crime Stoppers is now involved in the case in hopes of receiving a tip that leads to an arrest.

The shooting happened the morning of July 5 in a business parking lot near University Avenue and Wright Street. Officials with the Champaign Police Department said the victims were present at a gathering when one of the victims, a 41-year-old man, engaged another person in a verbal altercation around 3 a.m.

As the altercation escalated, the other person pulled out a gun and fired a shot. The victim was shot in the abdomen and a 28-year-old female victim was grazed by the bullet.

The offender fled the area while the victims went to the hospital, where they met with police officers. Both victims are recovering from their injuries.

Police are asking that if anyone who has cameras on their businesses or residences in the area, they review their footage from the time of the shooting and look for suspicious people or vehicles. Such footage may assist in the investigation.

Anyone who has footage or any other information about this shooting is asked to contact Champaign County Crime Stoppers. Tips can be submitted by calling 217-373-8477, visiting Crime Stoppers’ website or using the P3 Tips app.

Any tips submitted to Crime Stoppers is 100% anonymous; not even law enforcement will get a tipster’s name. If a tip leads to an arrest, the person who provided it can be rewarded with up to $5,000 in cash.
