'Little Maize' to be torn down Tuesday

CHAMPAIGN — Demolition will begin Tuesday morning on Maize Mexican Grill's original location — aka "Little Maize"— at 60 E. Green St., said owner Armando Sandoval.

The property is owned by University Group, which has plans for a new development at the site.

Maize has two other locations; one on Chestnut Street and one at the Illini Union. It also has a food truck.

“(Green Street) was our first location, so that’s how everybody got to know us and that’s where we got started, so it holds a very, very special place in our heart and it’s a very sad day for us as well,” Sandoval said in a previous interview.

However, he added that it's possible they may find their way back to the site, depending on what kind of space is available in the new development.
