Felipe Hernandez takes charge of AFD after months-long search
Felipe Hernandez Jr. made city history as the first Latino to be appointed as the Alexandria Fire Department’s permanent fire chief after being sworn in on July 8. Hernandez, who retired as fire chief in Rochester, N.Y., and then subsequently served as the superintendent of the New York State Academy, said he felt compelled to return to the fire service when he learned about Alexandria’s search for a new fire chief following former Chief Corey Smedley’s retirement from the AFD in January.
Henrico Schools to host back-to-school event, Hoop It up tournament Aug. 9
Henrico County Public Schools will host its “Back-to-School Kickoff” Aug. 9 at the Henrico Sports and Events Center. The event will feature a variety of activities for families, including the return of the 3-on-3 Hoop It Up basketball tournament, a pep-rally style celebration, a school and community resource fair, a “Kid Zone” area and an immunization clinic.

E. Coli Levels High in the James and VDH Issue Recreational Water Advisory
Testing of the James River from several points across Richmond shows significantly high levels of E. coli. According to James River Watch, testing conducted on Thursday, July 11, showed 817 colony forming units (CFU) per 100 ml of water at West 42nd Street, 1,204 CFU per 100 ml at Belle Isle and 1,987 CFU per 100 ml at Mayo Island.
