VCU Health mobile cancer screening at three locations reduces travel burden for patients
A new 50-foot trailer will travel between three VCU Health locations to provide state-of-the-art, rapid scans for patients waiting for cancer screenings. By scanning the whole body in under 17 minutes, about half the time of a traditional scan, the mobile, digital PET/CT scanner makes it easier and quicker for patients to get screened and be put on a treatment plan.

The Board appointed Ms. Renee McBride as Assistant Principal, 11 months, at Greenview Knolls Elementary School. Ms. McBride holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelor’s Degree from Virginia State University.

Randolph-Macon to Break Ground on New Residential Village
Randolph-Macon College will break ground shortly on a village of apartment-style residence halls, planned to open at the beginning of the 2025-2026 academic year. The four-building complex will offer a total of 64 beds, with additional new parking spaces. The site, on the west side of the train tracks, is adjacent to the College’s business and advancement offices. It is located to the west of Center Street, north of Henry Clay Road, and south of Patrick Street.

The Virginia Department of Education will host eight “Commonwealth Conversations” with parents, educators and community members on cellphone-free education. This comes after Gov. Youngkin issued an executive order last week directing the Department of Education to draft guidance for public school divisions to adopt local policies and procedures establishing a “cellphone-free education” in Virginia. The executive order mandates Virginia public school divisions establish a cellphone-free education by Jan. 1 of next year.
Severe Drought Impacts Albemarle, Greene, Madison; Extreme Conditions in Augusta
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The U.S. Drought Monitor reports that as of Tuesday, 37% of Virginia is experiencing severe drought, with 11% in extreme drought. Albemarle, Greene, and Madison counties are among those in severe drought. Rockingham, Shenandoah, Augusta, Page, Warren, and Frederick counties are facing extreme drought conditions. While recent rain showers have provided some relief, meteorologists indicate that significant improvements are still needed to overcome the drought situation. The prolonged dry spell has raised concerns about water supply and agricultural impacts across the Commonwealth.
Virginia man convicted in 2021 Marion murder
A Virginia man was convicted of first-degree murder, and other charges, for the 2021 murder of Teresa Greer. 40 year old Jason Whittaker was convicted of first-degree murder, abduction, arson, and animal cruelty. His sentencing is scheduled for November 21 where he will be facing a maximum of two life sentences plus 15 years. Greer’s body was found in a fire-damaged home in Marion on North Chestnut Street.
