Armstrong boys basketball got a key 73-70 win over Champlin Park on Feb. 1 thanks to a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Navonn Fields.

The night did not start easily for Armstrong, who had a deficit to deal with at halftime as Champlin Park led 42-37 at Armstrong High School.

The Falcons got to work, making it a one or two-point game for much of the following 10 minutes with heavy work from Seth Newbern, Fitz Freeman, Charles Duncan and Desmond Ware. The two teams spent significant minutes tied, sitting at 58-58 during a timeout with 7:37 left on the clock.

Champlin Park remained determined and retook the lead multiple times through the work of Kyler Pust, Jevon Kiros and Amory Peterson.

The teams exchanged the lead back and forth several times in the final five minutes. With 30 seconds to go, Armstrong led 70-68. After two timeouts, 24 managed to score a two-pointer to make it 70-70, but Armstrong had one last word.

It was Fields who made the last statement of the game, sprinting to the other end of the court before launching a three-pointer. The buzzer, crowd, and Armstrong boys basketball team screamed in response as the shot sunk perfectly into the net to win the game, 73-70.

Armstrong’s top scorer was Newbern with 18 points. Charles Duncan added 17. Champlin Park’s Peterson led all scorers with 21 points on Thursday.

Armstrong’s conference record improved to 6-4 last week, 10-8 overall. Champlin Park’s adjusted to 5-8 in conference, 10-10 overall.

Armstrong boys basketball will play two games the following week, traveling to Coon Rapids on Wednesday, Feb. 7, before traveling to Roosevelt on Feb. 9.

Champlin Park boys basketball will play one game the following week, hosting Blaine on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

    Rebels at Coon Rapids

Champlin Park opened last week with a 71-63 loss to Coon Rapids on the road on Jan. 30, cutting short its five-game winning streak and marking its first conference loss since Jan. 12.

The Rebels led 40-36 at halftime, but scored just 23 points in the second half while Coon Rapids added another 35.

Preston Thielke led the Rebels’ scoring with 16 points. Dom Mueller and Peterson each scored 10.
