    Falcons, Rebels and Pirates send track and field athletes to state

    Champlin Park, Park Center and Robbinsdale Armstrong track and field teams were busy at the end of last month with a Northwest Suburban Conference meet and their respective section tournaments last week.

    Armstrong’s Caitlyn Osanai, Avery Cuper, Ava Mack, Sarahya College, LaVie Freeman and Luke Pappas qualified for state alongside the 4x100 girls and 4x200 boys relay teams.

    Champlin Park’s Thenic Yantambwe, Matthew Bruggers, Makayla Shipman, Jayi Wilson, Abigail Hibbs, and the 4x100 and 4x200 girls relay teams qualified for state, as did Maya Woods and Breanna Benjamin for Park Center.

    The top two finishers from each event at their respective section meets automatically advance to the state meet, June 6-8 at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

    Section 6AAA

    Armstrong finished third in the girls varsity events at sections on its home track.

    Tamia Floyd earned fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.93 seconds. Araiya Chiaokhiao-Bowman earned seventh in the 200 and Lyric Richardson-Smith also took sixth in the 400. Osanai and Cuper took second and fourth in the 1600 meters with times of 4:56.13 and 5:14.71. Osanai also took second in the 3200 meters with a time of 10:40.50. MacKenzie Lovejoy led a competitive pack for Armstrong in the 100-meter hurdles with a third-place finish and time of 16.41. Tookie Harris took fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.60.

    Armstrong’s 4x100 relay team took first with a time of 49.13, featuring Tamia Floyd, Chiaokhiao-Bowman, Olivia Suchy and Sarahya College. The 4x200 team also notably finished third. Mack took second in the shot put with a mark of 35-11. Kadence Joseph and Julia Brincks earned fourth and fifth. Mack also earned third in discus with a mark of 127-5. College earned second in the high jump with a mark of 5-2, the exact line of state qualification.

    Armstrong finished fourth in the boys varsity events as a team.

    Freeman was one of the stars of the show with a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles and a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with times of 15.38 and 42.77 respectively. He qualified for state with the prior.

    Reid Stanslaski earned fourth in the boys 100 and fifth in the 200 with times of 11.25 and 22.81, respectively. Emmett Fallah also took sixth in the 200. Lucas Ringel earned fourth in the 400 with a time of 52.20. Alvan Hearn earned eighth in that event. Sam Majewski took fifth in the 800 with a time of 1:59.68.

    Armstrong’s 4x200 relay team of Stanslaski, Eli Kuempel, Lucas Ringel, and Kevon Johnson took second with a time of 1:28.88.

    Pappas impressed in the field with a second-place finish in shot put with a mark of 52-10. He also took fourth in the discus with a mark of 146-2. Pappas qualified for state with his shot put performance. Senior Elijah Scott took third in boys long jump with a mark of 20-0 and fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 42-2.5. Jordan McAfee earned 10th in the high jump.

    Section 5AAA

    Yantambwe starred for Champlin Park in the boys events, qualifying for state with a third-place finish in the boys long jump at a mark of 22-8. Salman Mohamed took third in an impressive 800-meter performance with a time of 1:58.62. Logan Martinez and William Maher took sixth and eighth. Charlie Hibbs earned fifth in the boys 1600 meters with a time of 4:23.04. Hibbs added a third-place finish in the 3200 meters as well with a time of 9:26.75. The Rebels took third in both the 4x200 and 4x800 boys relays. Bruggers took second in shot put with a mark of 50-10.25 and third in discus with a mark of 149-1.

    Shipman earned first in the girls 200-meter dash with a time of 25.13. Wilson earned second in the girls 100 with a time of 12:30. Wilson also earned second in the long jump with a mark of 18-0.5. Olivia Osonowo earned third in the 400 meters. Hibbs earned second in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:10.37 and second in the 3200 with a time of 10:57.11.

    The 4x100 relay team of Amara Easley, Shipman, Wilson, and Osonowo qualified for state and won in sections with a time of 48.14. Those same four qualified for state with their 4x200 relay time of 1:41.24.

    Shynika Chatman impressed for Park Center, taking third in the girls 100 with a time of 12.61. Shamere Chatman also took seventh in the 100, before finishing third in the 200 with a time of 25.97. Woods earned second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.85, matching the state qualifying time. Benjamin earned first in the triple jump with a mark of 37-7.75. Jaliyah Diggs and Shynika Chatman earned fifth and sixth in the girls long jump. Blake Beaver had a competitive day for Park Center, earning 11th in the boys 1600 meters with a time of 4:42.84. He also took 10th in the 3200 with a time of 10:24.39.

    Conference meet

    The Falcons, Pirates, and Rebels all took part in the Northwest Suburban Conference meet from May 21 to the 23. Champlin Park took fourth in the boys varsity events with 93 points, while Armstrong earned 11th. The Falcons finished in sixth place in the girls varsity events, while Champlin took eighth and Park Center took 13th.

    Champlin Park senior Alvin Thomas took first in the boys 400 with an impressive time of 49.23. Thomas and Armstrong senior Reid Stanslaski took fifth and eighth in the boys 100 meters with times of 11.26 and 11.41 respectively.

    Stanslaski took seventh in the 200 with a time of 22.80, while Thomas took ninth place. Majewski earned seventh in the 800 meters while Mohamed and Charles Hibbs took sixth and seventh in the 1600 meters. Beaver was Park Center’s top finisher in that event in 11th place. Beaver also took 17th in the 3200 meters, while Mohamed and Hibbs took fifth and sixth in the same event. Mohamed’s time was 9:47.63. Rebels junior Kyle Erickson earned sixth in the boys 110-meter hurdles, while Freeman took seventh in the boys 300 meter hurdles. The Champlin Park 4x800 relay team impressed with a second-place finishing time of 8:05.91 by Benjamin Matzke, Martinez, Caleb Osterberg, and Maher.

    Pappas took third in boys shot put with a mark of 51-5.25. Champlin Park duo Isaiah Wright and Bruggers took fourth and fifth in that event. Pappas was also fifth in discus with a mark of 142-06. Rebels high jumper Sheikh Dukuly earned second with a mark of 6-0. Yantambwe took first in the long jump with a mark of 22-0.75.

    Jayi Wilson earned second for Champlin Park in the girls 100 with a time of 12.38, while Park Center junior Shynika Chatman earned fifth with a time of 12.82. Pirate Shamere Chatman earned eighth in the 200 meters, while Osonowo earned third in the 400 meters with a time of 58.32. Armstrong seniors Osanai and Cuper earned second and third in the 1600 with times of 5:01.70 and 5:13.46. Osanai earned first in the girls 3200 meters with a time of 10:51.03 while Cuper took fifth. Champlin Park’s Abigail Hibbs split the two in third place with a time of 11:02.73. Armstrong senior Cecelia Borsay took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.56, while Park Center’s Woods earned fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.90. The Champlin Park girls relay teams took first and second in the 4x100 and 4x200 respectively.

    Mack and Joseph took third and fifth in girls discus with marks of 115-10 and 114-7.

    Kiera Lukandwa earned fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 35-5.25. Diggs and sophomore Claire Nelson took seventh and 10th in girls long jump with marks of 16-7 and 16-4.5.
