The Champlin Park Rebels took part in the Class AAA state championships last week at St. Michael-Albertville, sending several athletes to battle out with the best in Minnesota.
Junior Michael Bruggers took ninth in the boys shot put, reaching a mark of 50 feet, 2.75 inches in a hard-fought battle eventually won by Brainerd’s Dylan Gross. Bruggers reached state with a third-place mark of 49-1 at the Section 5AAA Championships.
Champlin Park senior long jumper Thenic Yantambwe earned sixth place with a mark of 22-0.75. Yantambwe hit a personal record at sections this season, reaching a mark of 22-8 to qualify for state.
Junior Abigail Hibbs earned 11th in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11 minutes, 6.11 seconds and 14th in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:10.80. She earned second in both events the week prior at the Section 5AAA Championships.
Champlin Park junior Makayla Shipman earned a spot in the finals for the girls 200 with a sixth-place prelim finish and time of 25.39. She earned ninth in the finals with a time of 25.82 to conclude a hard-fought campaign after taking first at the Section 5AAA Championships.
Junior Jayi Wilson had a busy day in both individual and team events. She earned 13th in the girls 100 with a time of 12.70.
Olivia Osonowo also earned 17th in the girls 400 prelims with a time of 1:00.64.
The relay team of Amara Easley, Shipman, Wilson, and Osonowo took part in the 4x100 and 4x200. They took fourth in the 4x100 prelims before clinching second place with a time of 48.38 in the finals. The same group took second in the 4x200 prelims before earning third in the finals with a time of 1:40.55.
