Chandler Police have provided an update about an incident that happened Wednesday, May 8.

In a news release, the department stated officers shot and killed Ruben Alejandro Felix Lopez, 45, after he went after officers with knives.

The release said officers were called to a home in the  300 block of Los Feliz Drive, near Ray Road and McClintock Drive for a domestic disturbance call.  Police said upon arrival, officers were told by "a homeowner" that a man who didn't live at the home was in the backyard, behaving "erratically."

Officers got into the backyard via a side gate and were immediately confronted by a man who had two "large knives," the release states.   The man then made threatening statements toward the officers, police said.

Officers then spent the next 30 minutes trying to de-escalate the man, the report states.

Police used multiple less-lethal devices in an attempt to get the man to comply with officer commands., but those were unsuccessful, they said.

When the man charged at officers "in an aggressive manner" with the knives, three officers opened fire, police said.

Officers then rendered medical aid. The Chandler Fire Department later declared Lopez dead at the scene, police said.

Police said no officers were injured and there was no danger to the community. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
