Chandler’s newest sports facility was christened Sept. 7.

Mayor Kevin Hartke threw out the first pitch as the $19 million four Tumbleweed Diamondplex artificial turf fields were formally opened.

Though Hartke’s ceremonial first pitch appeared to be off the plate, longtime umpire and fellow Chandler City Council member Matt Orlando called the pitch a strike. Orlando joked at an August council meeting, in advance, the pitch “will be a strike.”

The complex's opening takes pressure off of the facilities at Folley Park used by the Chandler Girls Softball League. Orlando said “re-imagining” of Folley Park’s layout and facilities is on the horizon.

You just don’t see kids using facilities on their own anymore. Thats a big investment for “organized use”. Maybe the leagues should pick up the cost and maintenance of the fields. After all don’t they charge pay to play? Bad government in Chandler. More empty ballparks like the ones near Kyrene and the 202.
