Watertown man enters plea agreement for one charge of rape & remaining are dismissed
WATERTOWN, S.D.(KXLG)- On July 17, 2024, 63-year-old James Barrett Kaska, a convicted sex offender, pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree rape. The plea agreement was presented in the Circuit Court of Codington County, SD, with Assistant Attorney General Kelly Marnette representing the state and Manuel de Castro representing the defendant.

South Dakota awards $2M in grants for long-term care, but facilities sought $5M more
The South Dakota Department of Human Services recently awarded $2 million in grants for technology and equipment in the long-term care industry, which has been afflicted with closures and staffing shortages. Minnesota DNR has added No. 11 to its pool of Scientific & Natural Areas (SNA) in Lake Superior's Minnesota neighborhood, it announced this week. "The new 25 acre Icelandite Coastal Fen Scientific and Natural Area was acquired by the DNR with help from Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and Reinvest in Minnesota. The site is 11 miles northeast of Grand Marais and is one of only two known fens on coastal wetlands on Minnesota's North Shore." This aerial view by T. Pig Rescued Recently from the Big Sioux River Has Passed Away
Some sad news. The pig that was rescued last week from the banks of the Big Sioux River has passed away. Dakota News Now reports that a small pig was spotted on the banks of the Big Sioux on Thursday, (July 18) which prompted Sioux Falls Animal Control and Sioux Falls Fire Rescue to snap into action to perform a water rescue just north of Falls Park a short time later.

Mercato building slated for redevelopment anchored by Southeastern Behavioral Health
A multistory development including Southeastern Behavioral Health and income-qualified apartments is planned to replace the vacated building on the so-called Mercato Block. The existing building on the 600 block of West 11th Street would be demolished and replaced by a three-story building with Southeastern Behavioral Health on the first floor and 55 apartments designated for low-income residents on the floors above.
