    2024-02-27

TOMAH, Wis. (WKBT) -- Fire officials in Tomah are providing an update on the investigation into the fire on Superior Avenue Friday.

In a Facebook post, the fire department reported that 16 people have been displaced as a result of the fire. They were living in residential areas above the businesses below. The Red Cross is providing assistance.

Two firefighters suffered injuries battling the blaze, including a smashed thumb and a broken toe.

Officials said the use of an excavator to extinguish the fire may have also compromised physical evidence at the scene. An official cause is not yet determined.

Tomah Fire and a third-party fire and explosion investigator are continuing their investigation. Chief Tim Adler is asking anyone with information, pictures or video of the beginning stages of the fire contact the fire department at (608) 374-7460.
