MOUNT HOREB, Wis. - Mount Horeb Strong has been the message throughout the community following last week's deadly incident at the middle school.

Students in the School District of Mount Horeb will return to class Monday for the first time since an armed student was shot and killed by law enforcement.

When students arrive, they'll be greeted with supportive messages written in chalk on the ground. Superintendent Dr. Steve Salerno tells News 3 Now it's part of the efforts of Mount Horeb families to ensure students make a smooth return to learning.

"Getting back into the procedures and routines is what we know to be true in order to help our kids have a successful return. Our staff continues to ready themselves," Dr. Salerno said. "None of us has a corner on the market as to what is the proper way to grieve and then move forward. We spent a lot of time with our faculty and staff - hearing from them, about what they need. We gotta fil their hearts and fill their buckets."

Dr. Salerno says the schools will continue to provide therapy dogs, extra counselors and law enforcement in each building. Representatives from the Wisconsin Office of School Safety will also be in some schools.

Carmen Klassy is a Mount Horeb parent.

"I definitely have some anxiety about it, but I know the school staff are going to do all that they can to make sure that our students feel safe," Klassy said.
