Another tiny house village to be supported by Dane County

MADISON, Wis. -- In an effort to increase access to, and affordability of, housing in Dane County, the county Department of Human Services is providing support for a new tiny house village in Madison.

According to a release Thursday, the agency will sponsor Occupy Madison's application to build the new development on South Stoughton Road in Madison.

Occupy Madison was selected via an application process to which it was the sole respondent. Under the sponsorship of Health and Human Needs Supervisor Heidi Wegleitner, the committee is slated to move the $500,000 forward on Thursday, May 23.

The developed Tiny House Village will contain houses for 20-30 residents; a wood working workshop and craft shop to build houses; community space for meetings; and living facilities for residents to include common area, showers, laundry, and kitchen facilities.

The village will prioritize housing for residents that are experiencing unsheltered homelessness and living in places not meant for human habitation, primarily on the street, in tents or vehicles; people sleeping at shelter; and people who are doubled-up.

This will be the second tiny house village that Dane County has helped support, and the third overall. The first site that Dane County supported is located on Madison’s North Side and was established in 2021. It is currently home to around 28 households. Dane County’s investment in the North Side village totaled $200,000 in ARP funding.
