MADISON, Wis. -- The City-County building will soon have a new flag hanging outside its building.

The Ho-Chunk Flag will hang below the US flag outside the City-County building in Madison. The City-County Liaison committee, which is comprised of county and city elected officials and staff, voted on Aug 1 to change the operational rules of the building towards paving the way for the flag to hang.

The Dane County Board approved a resolution in March to hang the Ho-Chunk flag pending City-County Liaison Committee approval.

The resolution by the county recognized that it conducts daily operations on land known and recognized as Dane County. The land is also the ancestral, traditional, and contemporary land of Ho-Chunk, Sauk, and Kickapoo nations.

Dane County joined a small handful of counties throughout the country which recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day as an official paid holiday. The board officially approved the legislation on Feb 5.

Along with the approval for the Ho-Chunk flag to hang, the City-County Liaison Committee also approved the hanging of the following flags:

    • The Tibetan Flag, Mar 10.
    • The Transgender Flag, Mar 31.
    • The Progress Flag, June 1.
    • The Juneteenth Flag, June 19.
    • The German Flag, Oct 1.
