JANESVILLE, Wis. -- Janesville residents will see an increased law enforcement presence starting Friday.

The US Department of Transportation National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) will be working with the Janesville Police Department for the Drive Sober or Get Pulled high-visibility enforcement campaign starting Friday and running though Sept 2.

The goal is to discourage drunk driving and prevent the crashes seen in previous Labor Day weekends.

DHSTA said during the 2022 Labor Day holiday there 490 crash deaths nationwide. 39% (190) of those 490 deaths involved a drunk driver and 25% involved drivers who were driving with a BAC almost twice the legal limit (.15+ BAC). Among drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 who were killed in crashes over the Labor Day holiday in 2022, 47% of those drivers were drunk, with BACs of .08 or higher.

Tips on how to prevent drunk driving

    • If a driver finds they are unable to drive, they should give their keys to a sober driver so that person can get home safely.
    • A friend who has been drinking and is considering driving, you should be proactive-take their keys away and help them get a sober ride home.
    • If you spot a drunk driver, contact local law enforcement.

Anyone who has a problem with stronger punishment should consider addressing their own substance abuse problems before getting behind the wheel.

2 people were murdered last week at the intersection of Delavan Drive and Jackson st. by a drunk driver, second occurrence. The court should be held partially culpable for this, because a person drunk driving clearly has a problem. 1st offense should require court mandated rehab. If a person chooses to potentially murder others, it is a great big friggin problem!
