Man shot by police officer at Fitchburg apartment dies

FITCHBURG, Wis. -- A man who was shot by a police officer during an altercation at a Fitchburg apartment on Monday has died, the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) announced Friday.

According to the DOJ, the 28-year-old man died at a hospital Thursday afternoon.

Officers were called to the Whispering Pines Condominiums, located in the 800 block of Whispering Pines Way, at around 8 a.m. Monday morning following a 911 hang-up.

Officers allegedly found a couple having an altercation. Police said the man was armed with a knife and charged at officers, at which point one officer fired his gun and struck the man.

The DCI continues to investigate the shooting and the officers involved were placed on administrative assignment. The DCI will turn over its findings to the Dane County District Attorney's Office when the investigation is complete.
