MADISON, Wis. -- The American Cancer Society announced Tuesday it received a $1 million grant to enhance lodging and transportation programs in Wisconsin and other states, extending critical resources and hope to those battling cancer.

In an effort to ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to treat and survive cancer, the ACS said the grant will help continue to remove barriers to care and provide essential resources to those affected by cancer. The lodging and transportation programs will empower patients across Wisconsin, Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota.

The ACS said the programs will provide essential funding to health systems, foundations, and community organizations, while ensuring that cancer patients have access to vital transportation and lodging services. Patients will be able to attend necessary medical appointments, focus on their treatment and recovery, and know they have the resources they need for equitable care.

When a rural resident is battling cancer , the ACS said the financial burden of traveling and securing lodging can be a deterrent to receiving and completing potentially life-saving treatment. The programs aim to relieve this burden while also reduce disparities in access to care.
