MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin Veterans Museum, in partnership with the Madison Central Business Improvement District, invites families and pet parents to honor war hero and K9 Brownie.

The WVM said Brownie was a family dog who served as a sentry in WWII with the Dogs for Defense program. After his service, he returned to his family in King, Wisconsin. His service will be celebrated with a puppy parade and author event on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in Lisa Link Peace Park.

To begin the celebration, the WVM said a short parade down the State St. pedestrian mall will kick off Brownie's event. Dogs and children of all ages are welcome, and are encouraged to dress up. Prizes will be awarded for best costume and best Brownie look-alike. Following the parade, author Kelly Nelson will read her new children’s book, "Brownie the War Dog: Veteran's Best Friend."

The WVM said Brownie began his sentry training in 1943. While serving, he was wounded and lost an eye. He returned to his family in Wisconsin in September of 1944, where he became a beloved mascot and friend to residents at the Veterans Home in King. Tragically, Brownie was struck by a car and died in 1949.

Brownie was buried with military honors in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in his hometown. To learn more about Brownie, visit the Wisconsin Veterans Museum's website .
