JOHNSON CREEK, Wis. -- A gas main break in Johnson Creek shut down the area of Milwaukee Street and North Watertown Street for over 3 hours Wednesday afternoon.

Johnson Creek Fire Chief Ben Patterson said crews responded immediately and fire crews identified a large, high pressure underground gas main had been struck and was releasing a large plume of natural gas approximately 30 feet into the air.

Patterson said residents were advised to shelter in place as the investigation commenced.

Crews began evacuating all people in the immediate area and personnel from all agencies on scene began evacuating the homes and businesses located parallel to the intersection.

WE Energies crews worked to slow down the gas main break and secured electrical service to the  entire area while crews worked to secure the gas service. Once WE Energies safely secured the gas service to the affected area, fire crews monitored the air quality in each of the affected structures.

No hazards were identified through and each home or business was turned back over to the owner or occupant.

Johnson Creek Fire said roads re-opened at 12:40 p.m.
