MADISON, Wis. -- U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, Governor Tony Evers, and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue announced Wednesday Wisconsin residents will have the option to file their taxes with the Internal Revenue Service for free in 2025.

Baldwin said Wisconsin will join the IRS Direct File program for filing season 2025, giving eligible Wisconsin taxpayers an option to file their taxes online, directly with the IRS, for free. When l aunched as a pilot program in 2024, Direct File users claimed more than $90 million in refunds and saved an estimated $5.6 million in tax preparation fees.

The move comes as a way to make filing taxes easier, faster, and less expensive, without having to deal with exorbitant junk fees. Evers said Direct File will "save hardworking folks time and money," while Congressman Mark Pocan said the process reflects a big win for taxpayers across Wisconsin.

Eligible taxpayers can file using a smartphone, laptop, tablet, or desktop computer. For eligibility requirements and additional information, visit directfile.irs.gov and revenue.wi.gov .
