Wisconsin State Patrol plans aerial enforcement

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin State Patrol announced Friday pilots are again scheduled to keep an eye out for traffic violations from the air Aug. 23.

Weather permitting, the State Patrol said the Air Support Unit is set to monitor the Madison Beltline (US 12/18) in Dane County on Friday, Aug. 23. When a pilot observes a violation, they communicate with ground-based units to initiate a traffic stop.

The State Patrol said its primary mission is public safety, which includes enforcing traffic laws to help make sure drivers reach their destinations safely. Aerial enforcement is one way to enhance these efforts, as it is much easier to spot drivers who are speeding or driving aggressively from the air than it is on the ground.

Many aerial enforcement missions are announced publicly to reinforce the State Patrol’s goal to improve safety through voluntary compliance with traffic laws.
