MADISON, Wis. -- Early voting in Wisconsin is October 22 - November 3.

Dane County Clerk Scott McDonell said early voting is the best time to vote.

"You could be sick. Your kid could be sick. It could be pouring rain," said McDonell. " Two, you know, that the envelope was filled out correctly. You know, remember from previous elections where there's been issues with the address or signature, the clerks, the one witnessing it."

He added that the first few days of early voting usually draws a crowd. By day three, voters should be able to have minimum delays at the polls.

Voters must be registered to vote. If you aren't registered, you can register day of at the polls.

To register, you need a form of identification and proof of address.

"So your ID is for the purpose of saying who you are. It can also be used to say, this is where I lived," said McDonell. "But you know, people move a lot in eight years. Your ID is there for it. So these can be two different things. You can show a bank statement with your current address on it, and then your ID can just show who you are."

Once registered, voters will fill out an absentee ballot and put the ballot in an envelope when finished.

McDonell said the votes won't be read or counted until November 5, Election Day.

Voters can go to any polling location in the city they live in.

" So let's use Madison as an example. You can vote early at any of the libraries and locations they have. They're all available to you, but you can't . Let's say you live in the city of Verona. You can't try to vote early in Madison. So it has to be within the jurisdiction that you live," said McDonell.

On November 5, voters have one designated, neighborhood polling place that they vote.
