Madison restaurateur opens a coffee shop in Blue Mounds

A new business serving Barriques coffee opened its doors at noon on July 26 on the ground floor of the historic Blue Mounds Opera House.

The new shop, ObertAlvin Coffee House (2969 Main St., Blue Mounds), is named after owner Christopher Berge’s grandfathers.

Berge has a resume filled with familiar Madison dining industry names. Berge co-owned The Weary Traveler Freehouse for 20 years before selling it in June 2022 . He was also a co-founder of Barriques and Nattspil (as well as now-closed restaurants Blue Marlin, Restaurant Magnus and Cortadito Express).

ObertAlvin’s coffee will be sourced from Barriques Coffee Roasters and Cafes, a business with six cafes in the Madison area (co-owned by Berge’s brother, Finn Berge). In addition to coffee, visitors can order baked goods, salads, sandwiches and a curated selection of beer, wine and dry cider.

The shop can seat 15 inside and 10 on a back porch, plus a back room to accommodate larger groups.

ObertAlvin is located close to the Military Ridge State Trail, and a space upstairs will serve as a vacation rental marketed to bikers and hikers. The upstairs also offers a space for private events.

The coffee house is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. until 3 p.m., on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.
