NCAA Tournament Chapel Hill Super Regional preview

The Mountaineers delivered their best regional performance in program history last weekend, sweeping the Tucson Regional with a win over Dallas Baptist and two victories over Grand Canyon. The 3-0 weekend clinched the program’s first Super Regional appearance.

WVU southpaw Derek Clark gave the Mountaineers a leg up in the Tucson Regional with a complete game on the mound in WVU’s 4-1 win against Dallas Baptist in the first round. Clark — a First-Team All-Big 12 pitcher — also recorded the final two outs in WVU’s Super-Regional-clinching win over Grand Canyon Sunday night. He was awarded Tucson Regional MVP for his efforts.

Fellow starting pitcher Tyler Switalski (7.2 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 3 K) was also named to the All-Tournament Team, as were infielder Reed Chumley (4 for 10, 3 RBI, 2 R) and catcher Logan Sauve (6 for 13, HR, 6 RBI, 5 R).

UNC hosted the Chapel Hill Regional last weekend, and the Tar Heels’ season nearly ended early after winning their first two games in the regional. They lost to No. 2 LSU in the first game of the regional final, and they trailed 3-2 in the ninth inning in part two of the final against the Tigers before rallying to win in extra innings.

The Tar Heels arguably had the best pitching staff in the ACC this season. Their 4.27 team ERA was the lowest in the conference, and they allowed the fifth-lowest opponent batting average (2.53) in the league.

At the plate, the UNC performed in the top third of the ACC in most hitting categories. It slugged the fifth-most home runs (109), hit for the sixth-best batting average (.308) and recorded the fourth-highest on-base percentage (.413) in the conference.

UNC enters the Super Regional with a 35-3 record at home this season.

The Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament consists of best-of-three series between the remaining 16 teams in the bracket. The eight winners advance to the College World Series.
