CHAPEL HILL, Tenn. (WKRN) — Chapel Hill police have arrested two teenagers for the burglary of a gun store.

On July 9, the Echo Three Armory Gun Store was broken into after a vehicle crashed into it and ammunition was stolen from the retailer. No firearms were taken from the store, but local authorities contacted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) for assistance on the case.

On July 18, the Chapel Hill Police Department announced that two boys, 15 and 17, were the ones responsible for the incident. Those boys have since been apprehended.

“This case was a top priority for our department,” said Chapel Hill Chief of Police Andrew Kon. “The stolen ammunition and the risk of potential for these subjects to attempt another burglary of this magnitude posed a significant risk to community safety.”

Chapel Hill police worked with ATF agents and the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) on the case, as the teens currently reside in Nashville. According to police, the two teens, whose names are being withheld, have also been tied to numerous other burglaries and auto thefts in Nashville. Additional charges will be filed.

The teens were reportedly able to be identified through surveillance footage. After arrest warrants were issued, Chapel Hill police said that a “coordinated operation” resulted in the capture of the two and the recovery of the stolen ammunition. Additional evidence is currently being processed, police added.

“We are grateful for the support and cooperation of the other business owners who furnished surveillance video and the cooperation of the other law enforcement agencies,” Kon said. “This case is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together. The suspects will now face the justice system for their actions.”

No further information was released, pending the ongoing investigation.
