CHAPMANVILLE- The Central Greenbrier all-stars got off to a hot start on opening day of the state tournament in Chapmanville on Friday evening, July 19, but the following day was not as kind to the boys from Greenbrier County.

East defeated Tygart Valley 14-5 on Friday before falling to Huntington 7-3 in the second game.

In the opener, CG jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a single from Carter Huffman and a 2-run home run from Michael Boothe.

That lead extended to 7-0 in the top of the third inning when Central Greenbrier put up five more runs. With one out, Peyton Ervin singled and Huffman then drew a walk. Boothe came through with an RBI single that scored Ervin, which Hendo Bostic followed with a towering 2-run homer to center field for a 6-0 CG lead. Acen Workman capped the scoring when he crossed home plate on an error.

That advantage extended to 8-0 in the fourth frame when Trenton Skaggs scored on a sac fly from Boothe.

Tygart Valley came roaring back in the bottom of that same inning and brought four runs across and cut their deficit to 8-4. However, Central Greenbrier scored two more in the fifth and put the finishing touches on the game with four more in the sixth just for good measure.

Central had 12 hits to go with their 14 runs. Boothe went 2-3 with a HR, three runs scored, and four RBIs. Dillon Jackson was 2-2 with a run, Ervin had two hits and scored two more, Bostic had a homer and drove in three, and Workman had one hit, scored twice, and had an RBI.

Central Greenbrier used five pitchers in the game that combined for eight strikeouts.

On Saturday, things just did not fall correctly for CG. Facing a good Huntington team, things began to unravel in the top of the fourth with Central Greenbrier ahead 3-1. With runners on first and third and no outs, Boothe struck out two consecutive hitters, but two straight walks after gave Huntington a run that made the score 3-2. Then, with the bases loaded, Huntington’s Coen W. laced a triple to right field that cleared the bases and, unbeknownst at that time, sealed the game.

Central Greenbrier’s bats went cold and after willing three runs home in the opening frame, they did not score a run the rest of the contest and had just one hit all night from Ervin. Bostic had two RBIs.

Despite taking the loss on the mound, Boothe did have 10 strikeouts in just 3.2 innings pitched. Ervin and Huffman kept Huntington at bay out of the bullpen, but there just was not enough offense for CG to rally late.

Central Greenbrier will now face the host team, Chapmanville, on Sunday, July 21 at 3:30. If they win, they will play again at 7:00 PM.
