    Santa Fe's Rich Chocolate Tradition

Santa Fe, New Mexico, is home to a deep tradition of chocolate, influenced by ancient Mesoamerican cultures like the Maya and the Aztec. The city has embraced this history by creating a modern twist on chocolate-based drinks, blending the old with the new. This Hot Chocolate Mix recipe draws inspiration from those rich traditions while adding flavors like French Vanilla, Hazelnut, or Amaretto for a unique, comforting experience perfect for chilly desert evenings.

The beauty of this recipe is in its simplicity and versatility. Whether you're hiking up the Sangre de Cristo Mountains or enjoying a cozy night indoors, a steaming cup of this hot chocolate will make you feel instantly warm and comforted.

Recipe: Santa Fe Inspired Hot Chocolate Mix

    Ingredients:

    • 2-1/2 cups powdered milk
    • 3/4 cup powdered coffee creamer (French vanilla, Amaretto, or Hazelnut recommended)
    • 2 cups instant chocolate mix
    • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

    Instructions:

    1. In a large bowl, combine the powdered milk, coffee creamer, instant chocolate mix, and powdered sugar.
    2. Stir until the mixture is fully combined.
    3. Store the mix in an airtight container.
    4. When ready to serve, add three heaping tablespoons of the mix to a cup of boiling water. Stir well and enjoy a rich, flavorful cup of hot chocolate.

A Sip of History and Comfort

This hot chocolate mix not only delivers warmth but also pays homage to New Mexico's ancient chocolate traditions. The added flavors like Amaretto or French Vanilla bring a modern twist that makes it a go-to drink for any time of year. Whether you're sharing it around a campfire under the stars or just curled up with a good book, this hot chocolate brings the flavors of Santa Fe to life.

I'm not sure how this is Santa Fe or New Mexican inspired. My Mom made this same mix 50 years ago, and added a dash of spice to each cup. Cinnamon, nutmeg, drop of vanilla, etc.
