Charles City County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Charles City Deputy Floyd Miles was mourned and remembered by community members Wednesday at his funeral.

The crowd of over 600 included around 300 first responders from across the county. Governor Youngkin was also in attendance.

Miles died earlier this month after suffering a medical emergency while assisting another deputy near the intersection of John Tyler Memorial Highway and Wayside Road. He grew up in Charles City and spent years with the Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Charles City County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was assisting a moped driver, who had blood on him and said that a group of unknown people were after him and trying to kill him.

Officials put the driver into the back of an ambulance, where he became combative and hit a deputy.

Sgt. Miles arrived at the scene and jumped in to help break up the struggle. However, as a result of the encounter, Miles suffered a “medical emergency” and subsequently died, according to the Charles City County Sheriff’s Office.
