    New ‘sensory space’ to open next week

    The Charles County Department of Recreation, Parks, and Tourism is inviting residents to the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Calm Cove Sensory Space on Tuesday, March 6, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Elite Gymnastics & Recreation Center located at 2745 Old Washington Road in Waldorf. Calm Cove provides multi-sensory resources to support sensory needs and captivate participants in fun and engaging activities. The space can be stimulating or calming depending on the user’s needs. It will be open to all ages Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon and from 5 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. The drop-in fee is $5 per person.

    Town halls with commissioners scheduled this month

    Commissioner Amanda Stewart (D) will host a town hall on Saturday, March 9, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Waldorf Senior and Recreational Center at 90 Post Office Road. The topic will be a discussion of the 2025 fiscal budget for Charles government and public school system.

    Commissioner Gilbert “BJ” Bowling (D) will host a town hall on Thursday, March 14, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bryans Road firehouse located at 3099 Livingston Road. The topics will be Charles County fiscal 2025 budget and development in western Charles County.

    Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins II (D) will host a town hall on Thursday, March 21, at 6 p.m. at the Copper Compass Craft Distilling Co., located at 4317 Charles Crossing Dr. in White Plains. The topic will be growth in Charles County.

    Naming committee seeks feedback on elementary school

    The Charles County Public Schools Elementary School Naming Committee seeks feedback on its name recommendations for Elementary School 23 in White Plains set to open in the 2025/2026 school year. A naming committee has presented three name recommendations for the school: Margaret Jamieson Thornton Elementary School, Ronald E. McNair Elementary School and White Plains Elementary School. The committee is collecting feedback through March 1 with a survey at www.ccboe.com/parents/redistricting-elementary-school.

    School system updates volunteer process

    Charles County Public Schools updated its volunteer processes to establish a network of community members interested in supporting schools. The new Community Volunteer Program provides an opportunity for community members who are not the parent/guardian of an enrolled Charles student to volunteer their time in supporting schools.

    Community members interested in volunteering with the Charles public school system can visit www.ccboe.com/parents/volunteer-information to complete an interest form. All volunteers are required to complete a prescreening questionnaire, online training and required background check.     VanGo moves to tracking app

    Charles County government recently announced that VanGO replaced its current app with TripShot. The app features a suite of tools including live bus tracking, real-time schedule updates and custom notifications. The app also features trip planning and other capabilities. TripShot is available on smartphones, as well as on the computer.

    To access online, visit www.go-Vango.com, select your desired routes, and choose a stop nearest you to view estimated time of arrival. The current app, DoubleMap, is no longer used or maintained.

    To access the app on your smartphone, search “TripShot” on your app store, and download it for free. Once downloaded, Type “VanGo” in the system selection tab. From the main screen you can plan your trip, view nearby stops, and add specific routes to your favorites tab. You can also set up custom notifications for your route from the trip planner screen.
