Charles commissioners allow reimbursement to themselves for Ubers
The Charles County commissioners have voted to give themselves the ability to reimburse costs from their usage of external transportation services, like Uber or Lyft. In a 3-2 vote, the commissioners decided to amend their expense policy to add new language under the mileage section, to say, “Mileage funding may also be used to reimburse a county commissioner for expenses incurred in the employment of an external transportation service for business travel related to the execution of their duties as a county commissioner.” ...

Keeping it clean
Morgan State University Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter members participate in their 16th year of Charles County’s Adopt-A-Road Program on June 15. The local chapter is assigned to pick up litter along a 1.2-mile stretch of Lexington Drive in Waldorf. Charles County encourages residents and organization to help combat littering by “adopting” a county road. Volunteers receive sign recognition in exchange for cleaning their road at least three times a year. Gloves and bags are provided as well as trash disposal; safety vests and caution signs are also available upon request. Lemuel Dent Jr.'s remains, previously marked as 'unknown' in the Florence American Cemetery, were recently identified. The remains of a Buffalo soldier have finally been identified after decades missing. Pfc. Lemuel Dent Jr. was part of the African-American 92nd Infantry Division for World War II when he died in battle.

North Carolina Angler Hodges Mines One Spot for the Win at Phoenix Bass Fishing League Event at Potomac River
MARBURY, Md. (June 24, 2024) – Boater Richard Hodges, Jr., of Camden, North Carolina, caught a five-bass limit weighing 20 pounds, 10 ounces, Saturday to win the MLF Phoenix Bass Fishing League (BFL) Presented by T-H Marine on the Potomac River . Hosted by the Charles County Board of Commissioners, the tournament was the third event of the season for the BFL Shenandoah Division. Hodges earned $6,139 for his victory.
Motorcycle crash kills 24-year-old in Charles
A 24-year-old man died in a motorcycle crash earlier this week. On June 25 at 4:40 p.m., Charles sheriff’s officers responded to a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on Chapel Point Road near the intersection of Purcell Road in Port Tobacco. A preliminary investigation revealed a 2007 Honda CBR600 motorcycle, operated by Nicolas Conrad Slough of Bel Alton, left the roadway and struck a tree, according to a release by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office. Slough was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Anyone with information about this crash is asked to contact sheriff’s officer A. Fenlon #544 at 301-609-6227.
