One of Charleston ’s premier destinations for barbecue and smoked meats unexpectedly closed its doors on June 13, 2024, just ahead of Father’s Day weekend.

Lewis Barbecue ’s closure is attributed to “unforeseen maintenance” issues, and there is currently no confirmed reopening date. The restaurant’s website states:

“Lewis Barbecue CHARLESTON will be temporarily closed for maintenance until further notice. This decision has been made to ensure that we continue to provide you with the highest quality dining experience and service.”

Founded in 2016 by pitmaster John Lewis , the counter-serve barbecue joint at 464 N Nassau St is known for its prime beef brisket, pulled pork, turkey breast, pork spare ribs, Texas hot guts sausage, green chile cheddar sausage, and an array of specials, sides, snacks, and sandwiches.

Alongside the flagship Charleston location, Lewis also owns nearby Mexican restaurant Rancho Lewis , as well as another Lewis Barbecue outpost in Greenville.

A spokesperson for Lewis Barbecue told The Post and Courier that they hope to have a reopening date by today, June 14. Meanwhile, the restaurant’s staff is operating out of its Greenville location to fulfill catering orders for the upcoming busy weekend.
