CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — A repeat child sex offender was sentenced in a Charleston courtroom to federal prison after sending obscene material to a person he believed to be a minor.

Chad Michael Rabon, 34, of Lugoff, was sentenced to 25 years in prison by US District Judge Richard M. Gergel. Rabon pled guilty to two counts of attempted transfer of obscene material to a minor and two counts of commission of a felony sex offense involving a minor by a registered sex offender.

Evidence showed that from May 23, 2022, to June 30, 2022, Rabon had sexually explicit conversations with who he believed was a 13-year-old girl through the KIK Messenger app.

The ’13-year-old girl’ who Rabon was messaging was an undercover agent. Rabon tried to entice the 13-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity and sent obscene materials on different occasions.

Rabon was convicted previously for similar crimes by the state and is a registered sex offender. Following his 25-year sentence, he must serve a lifetime of court-ordered supervision.

“Rabon, a registered sex offender, knowingly preyed on who he believed to be a child,” said Adair F. Boroughs, U.S. Attorney for the District of South Carolina. “This sentence reflects the serious nature of Rabon’s crime, and we will continue to hold such offenders accountable.”

This case was investigated by the Mount Pleasant Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, and the South Carolina Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Assistant US Attorney Dean H. Secor is the prosecutor.
