CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston City Council passed a rezoning request Tuesday that will allow for renovation and expansion to 1000 King Street Apartments and additional mixed-use buildings to be added to the site.

The nearly 4-acre area will be reclassified for the King Palace Planned Unit Development.

Tim Keane, the Planning, Permitting, and Engineering Section Chief for the City of Charleston, previously told News 2 that 1000 King St., currently used as an apartment complex,  will be renovated, and other units will be built in the rezoned area.

Plans included designating 20% of the proposed 255 units as affordable and workforce housing.

City council also approved a section of the proposal allowing for seven-story builds on a portion of the rezoned property.

Keane explained those seven-story buildings would be on the backside of the property site.

“What happens with the site is that they go tall in the back, so adjacent to the big bridge, ramps, and things, they would be at seven stories. But then it would step down as you get to King St., so when you get to King St., you’re only at three stories,” Keane previously shared.

This development plan also includes connecting the project to the future Lowcountry Lowline through pedestrian and bike paths.
