CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Incoming freshmen at the College of Charleston will have a new major option, allowing new students to explore their interests before committing to a specific career path.

The College will put freshman into one of six meta-majors based on their interest during orientation registration. During orientation, the student will meet faculty and fellow students in that meta-major who share interests. The six meta-majors are:

    • Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences which is applicable to arts, education, law, PR, advertising, content creation, government, nonprofits and entrepreneurship.
    • Business which is applicable to careers in corporate, entrepreneurial, nonprofit and government sectors.
    • Education which prepares for careers in teaching and training, policy, administration and counseling.
    • Human Health and Behavior which applies to careers in healthcare administration, public health, research and health education.
    • Science, Technology, Engineering and Environment which applies to opportunities in engineering, research, project management, policy and environmental science.
    • Exploratory which allows undecided students to learn about all areas before picking a major.

During that first year, students will be placed in critical classes that help them explore the general interest meta-major they have chosen before narrowing down to a specific specialty. Even if students declare their major before the first year ends, they will stay in the meta-major through their freshman year.

After freshman year, students can narrow down where they choose to specialize.

“Choosing a major can be one of the most exciting and daunting decisions for college-bound students and their parents,” says Christopher Korey, associate provost for student success. “Meta-majors make that easier by providing a framework for their studies, allowing students to explore various topics and find the right major for them.”
