If anything can be said about South Carolina is that Charleston is the best visited place in the state, whether by locals or by visitors from around the globe. Charleston is well known for its history, for its parades, and for being in the Travel and Leisure Magazine for the world's best city title.

When you arrive in Charleston, you'll find nothing but charm in this southern city that's filled with beautiful architecture and pristine beaches. The city is known for its culture, so you can spend your time touring antebellum mansions, art galleries and trying out the excellent Southern food. From the Charleston culinary tours to the beautiful house on Rainbow Row, you’ll find something to see for everyone. So, with that in mind, here are our reasons you should choose to visit Charleston this year.

    1. It's so much more than its beaches. Charleston has amazing beaches, but it's so much more than that. Did you know that its history dates back to the early 1700s, before the Declaration of Independence was even written? It's one of the oldest cities in America and it's played a huge role in the Revolutionary and Civil wars. Through the cobblestone streets, the historic homes and the old plantations, the history is as visible today as it ever has been.
    2. The food is stunning. It's renowned for its low country cuisine, which blends African influences with southern and coastal. Charleston has offerings such as traditional Southern dishes like Callie's Hot Little Biscuit to fresh and delicious seafood. You can go to Chez Nous, the French restaurant with a handwritten menu and only six options that change just once a day. The quickest way to get to the culture is through its food.
    3. You can take a ghost tour.Charleston is known for being haunted. The centuries old history and the storied past that is embedded in its very bones can tell you that. The city has a law that is filled with Civil War tragedies, pirate legends and Gullah folklore, which sends that spectral quality to Charleston itself. You don't have to be a ghost believer to be able to take a walk through history and take a local ghost tour at the Old Charleston Jail. You can even head down to Charleston Market and visit multiple graveyards where the soldiers were once laid to rest.
    4. The plantations are just fantastic. The area that surrounds Charleston is home to the several historic plantations. Many of these plantations are still in production of crops today.Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, which was founded in 1676, is home to the oldest public gardens in America. These are the perfect places to learn more about what life in the South was like for the slaves who built those plantations and did the work of farming cotton while others profited.

Charleston is just one of those places you need to have on your bucket list, and you should be visiting at least once.
