UPDATE (3:12 p.m. on Friday, June 7): The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man accused of shooting at a neighbor and then at deputies Friday morning.

According to the KCSO, Chase Nelson, 32, of Charleston, shot at his neighbor around three times. They say Nelson lived on McCubbin Drive, which is adjacent to Coonskin Drive.

Deputies took cover behind a building and heard Nelson say a phrase at which point he shot twice toward the deputies, the criminal complaint said. The deputies were escorted to safety with an armored vehicle, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.

With the help of SWAT Team Operators and the armored vehicle, Nelson was taken into custody. No injuries are being reported, according to the sheriff’s office.

Nelson is being charged with three counts of wanton endangerment and is expected to be arraigned Friday afternoon. His bond is set at $250,000 cash-only.

UPDATE: (2:16 P.M. Friday, June 7) – The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office is releasing more details on a shots fired call that led to a large police presence in Charleston Friday morning.

According to the KCSO, authorities received a call regarding a person firing shots at a neighbor in the 1600 block of Coonskin Drive.

Kanawha County Sheriff Mike Rutherford says as deputies approached the house, a man started firing shots, pinning two deputies down behind an outbuilding. This prompted the KCSO to send an armored vehicle to get the deputies to safety.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded, including the KCSO, WVSP, CPD, and Kanawha County Park Police. The KCSO says after about half an hour, the man in the house surrendered and was taken into custody. Authorities say no one was injured in the incident and the man was the only person in the house. Rutherford says no shots were fired by law enforcement officers.

Rutherford says an investigation is underway, but the man was not someone previously known to law enforcement.

According to Rutherford, there is no risk to the public and the road is now open. Detectives will remain on the scene for “several hours” during the investigation.
