CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – West Virginia is getting nearly $25 million toward a construction project aiming to provide better public transportation in Charleston.

The project is being called the Capital Connector. The project will reconstruct Kanawha Boulevard and Greenbrier Street, and eliminate more than five acres of road surface. The $24,995,250 in funding will come from a national infrastructure grant through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) discretionary grant program.

The US Department of Transportation says the project will provide separate paths for cyclists, pedestrians and transit bus stops. It is also expected to improve lighting near the roads and enhance stormwater management. According to the USDOT, they also intend to improve Kanawha Boulevard with high-visibility crosswalks at all signalized intersections and add new transit bus stop shelters.

According to the USDOT, approximately 25% to 48% of the homes in the area of the project do not have access to private vehicles.
