Reggae at Regatta: Shaggy to open 2024 event

CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The 2024 Encova Presents Charleston Sternwheel Regatta is the summer’s biggest party with free concerts, sternwheeler races, and lots of family fun.

Among the performers this year is Reggae legend Shaggy. Born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, Shaggy got his start as an MC in the New York City dancehall scene.

After serving four years in the U.S. Marines, including two tours of duty in the Middle East as part of Operation Desert Storm, Shaggy inked his first record deal and quickly scored a global crossover smash with “Oh Carolina.”

Shaggy is bringing his hits to the Moses Auto Group Stage Wednesday, July 3 and will have everyone dancing to “Boombastic,” “Angel,” and “It Wasn’t Me.”

To date, Shaggy has sold more than 40 million album units, landed eight singles on the Billboard Hot 100, and has had seven albums on the Billboard 200, including four in the Top 40.

He has earned two Grammy Awards and is among the Top Three Streamed Reggae Artists of all time on Spotify.

The program features a wide range of contemporary, rare and classic tracks spanning the hip hop, dancehall and reggae genres with insights from Shaggy about the musical history of his Jamaican homeland and its global impact.

“I always try to bring the fun when I’m performing, and keep everything very lighthearted and joyous,” says Shaggy. “I think my purpose and my job is to bring joy to as many people as I can, and I want that to resonate within all of the music that I create.”

Shaggy will appear on the Moses Auto Group Stage Wednesday, July 3 following a performance by the Tom Batchelor Band.

Friday, July 5 is Country Music Night at the Regatta.

Emily Ann Roberts, earmarked as a significant artist to watch in 2024, will perform prior to the Montgomery Gentry ft Eddie Montgomery concert. Roberts began her rise to stardom on Blake Shelton’s team on The Voice and has over 45 million streams.

Additional Regatta performances include The Fab Four , Thursday, July 4 with opening performance by Shine and I Love the 90s Tour featuring Vanilla Ice, Treach of Naughty by Nature, Tone Loc, and Young MC, Saturday, July 6 with opening performance by The Unit Band.

All Regatta concerts are free and open to the public.
